Home Learning Policy

The College considers education to be a partnership between home and school. Home learning serves to strengthen this partnership by providing parents and caregivers with insights into what is being taught in the classroom and the progress of their children. The College sets home learning to:

• increase academic engagement between parents and their children;

• allow for the practice, extension and consolidation of, and preparation for, classroom learning for students;

• foster independence and habits of lifelong learning, self-discipline, concentration and study;

• provide opportunities for students to plan and organise their time; and

• develop a range of inquiry skills, including identifying and using information sources.

Senior Student Assistance Program

Lunchtime assistance in a range of subject areas can be arranged with senior students. Parents or students should approach their classroom teacher or mentor if interested.

The Learning Lounge (Homework Club)

In addition to the help teachers will provide students upon request, a complementary after-hours home learning assistance program is available for Secondary students. The program runs on a Tuesday afternoon and provides assistance with homework, assessment tasks and class work with which students may be experiencing difficulties. Please note that this program operates as group sessions and is not intended as one-on-one tuition. The program runs in the Atrium each Tuesday between 3.15pm and 4.15pm, at which time students are dismissed directly from the Atrium. Parents must arrange transport home at this time. Should parents be unable to collect their children within a reasonable time, children will be escorted to Out of School Hours Care at parents' expense. Lunchtime assistance is scheduled regularly and available as tuition by Senior student leaders.

Allocation of Time

Time spent on home learning will depend on age, ability, extracurricular activities and cultural obligations. The College aims that the average student in each cohort will average approximately the amount of time indicated in the tables below per night. There will, however, be peaks and troughs in the time demands placed on students for the completion of home learning and assessment tasks. Good planning by students will level out these peaks and troughs. Parents can assist students in this regard, especially in Secondary Years, by using the Upcoming Tasks function in Edumate.
